Unlike redundancy in words, repetition across sentences and paragraphs are harder to spot, even though they turn off the reader just as much.
In line with the previous post on reducing redundancy on a word level, this lesson plan teaches writers how to spot redundancy on a paragraph and sentence level.
WORD ECONOMY: Use fewer words to convey the same meaning.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?: Unlike in essay writing, where your teacher MUST read your essay, readers can click away. Get to the point.
HOW TO:
Paragraph level: Break each paragraph down into one bullet point. Ask yourself: do any of the paragraphs say the same thing?
Sentence level: Look at each sentence in the paragraph and ask yourself: how does this sentence add to what I wrote before?
Common errors: Students often write a vague sentence and later write another sentence that parrots the first and goes more into the specifics. Choose the more specific sentence.
Note: Check for sentence redundancy across paragraphs as well.
